Kalamazoo College uses the Tsukuba Test-Battery of Japanese (TTBJ) for determining placement for Japanese language courses.
Please use the following instructions to take the TTBJ on your computer. Please use Google Chrome, Firefox, or Edge to take this test.
Step 1: Application to take the test
1. Go to https://ttbj.cegloc.tsukuba.ac.jp/p1.html
2. Read the instructions and SPOT test description
3. Begin the test application for individual by clicking on the blue button.
4. Check the box to agree to the terms of service.

5. Click “Apply for the test” at the bottom.
Step 2: Selection of test to be taken
Select SPOT90 and click “Next”

Step 3: Check of system requirements
1. Click “Audio Check” button.
2. Click to play sound test, close the popup. If you could hear sound, click “Yes” in the box.
3. If your system meets all the requirements, a “Next” button will appear at the bottom of the page. Otherwise, resolve the issues with your system and refresh the page.
4. Click “Next” when all system requirements are met.
Step 4: Entry of applicant information
1. Enter your name and Email address. Please use your kzoo.edu email address.
2. In the section about sending your results to someone else, type sugimori@kzoo.edu in the “other email address” field.
3. In the Your Affiliation section, bypass the search and enter Kalamazoo College at the bottom. Click “Next”. 4. Confirm the information and click “Apply for the test”.
Step 5: Check your email
1. Your login information will be sent to you within a few minutes.

2. Click on the link in the email to log in.
3. Select English to complete your user profile in English, enter your username and password and submit.
Step 6: Fill out the user profile.
Required items are denoted with a MUST icon.
Click the Start button to continue to the practice test.
Step 7: Practice and test
1. Click PRACTICE for a 10-question practice test
2. Click START for the actual test.
Step 8: Scores
1. Your score will be displayed at the end of the test.
Step 9: Kanji SPOT 50 test Repeat steps 2-8, for the Kanji SPOT 50 test.
Your tentative placement will be available before you register in July if you complete the exams by June 15. Information on how to access it will be posted here in early July.
You may be required to take an additional exam during orientation week to adjust your placement. This exam will cover speaking Japanese and writing in Kanji. The Japanese program staff will contact you to set this up.
