Please read the following before starting the test!
You are asked to take the placement test ONCE only. Before starting the assessment, please read the PLACE Test Taker and Technology Guide. This guide will give you some tips for basic test taking. It will also serve as a troubleshooting guide should you have any technical issues.
Some basic information for getting started
You will need to use one of the following browsers, depending on your computer’s operating system:
- Windows: Internet Explorer 9+, Chrome 5+, Safari 4+
- Mac: Safari 4+, Chrome 5+
- ChromeOS: Chrome 5+
We suggest you use Chrome as it is the easiest browser with which to work. If you don’t have Chrome, then one of the above listed browsers will work.
You will need to make sure pop-up blocking is disabled before beginning the assessment.
You will need to use headphones with attached microphone (something like iPhone headphones or similar will work just fine) to complete certain sections of the assessment.
You will need to have the Chinese input method(s) ready to complete the writing section.
Getting Help
If you have any issues, please email the Test Administrator at Leihua.Weng@kzoo.edu with the subject “Language Placement Exam”. Nothing more and nothing less in the subject as the subject causes the email to go to a certain inbox that the testing administrator checks regularly. Any deviation from this subject will cause a delayed response.
Please note, staff at Kalamazoo College have no control over the technical aspects of the assessment. Should you have technical issues, please contact the testing company.
Accessing the Test
When you have read the Test Taker Guide and prepared your computer for the assessment, access the test with the following information (note: you can take the test only once, either in Mandarin Simplified or Mandarin Traditional).
For a Test in Mandarin Simplified:
Test Code: 14488-pl-cs-1
Password: 6639
For a Test in Mandarin Traditional:
Test Code: 14488-pl-ct-2
Password: 8323
Be sure to use your full name (first and last name) after you log into the assessment.
The results should be received by the Test Administrator within 5-7 business days or longer depending on the time of the year (Note: A business day is Monday through Friday during a normal week, not including any holidays. The day of the test does not count). Please, do not write asking for results as they do have to be scored by certified raters and not just a computer.
Thank you and good luck!
